Can a homeowners insurance cover an auto stolen because keys were taken from break in to home?

Q:My friend had the misfortune to get his house robbed and his car keys were stolen, by using which the burglars have also stolen the car. The car’s insurance only included liability insurance. Now the companies providing auto and homeowners insurance state that they won’t pay for the car. Is this legal? The car value was around $7000. Can an attorney help in such a situation?
A: The only thing your homeowners insurance should cover is the value of your car keys (unless they are specifically excluded from the policy). Of course it’s far from covering the value of your entire car.

If a car parked outside gets stolen it is not covered by homeowners insurance policy. If a car stored inside the garage gets stolen, it can sometimes be covered but most companies tend to exclude autos from homeowners insurance policies. Even if they are included in the policy, the amount of coverage will be limited, unless it is specified in the rider to your policy.
